Checkinatwork: from which amount and who has to register?
Whether you have to register depends on the type of work and the total amount of the works. Here you can read how the NSSO (RSZ/ONSS) calculates that amount, who registers and when the obligation ends.

From which amount do you have to register?
For works on immovable property (construction work), the registration obligation applies to construction sites where the total amount is equal to or higher than 500,000 euros (excluding VAT). That amount applies to works that started after 29 February 2016. For works that started from 1 April 2014 up to and including 29 February 2016 it was 800,000 euros (excluding VAT) (NSSO, works on immovable property).
How do you calculate the total amount?
You add up the amounts of the contracts of every declaring contractor that concluded a contract with the client, for the same project (NSSO, questions about attendance registration).
The amount therefore counts per site, not per company. A small subcontractor on a large site also has to register.
From when?
As soon as the amount is reached: at the start of the works, or during the works if the amount is reached later (NSSO, works on immovable property).
Which sectors are covered?
- Works on immovable property, except cleaning and certain activities in agriculture, horticulture and forestry.
- The delivery of ready-mixed concrete.
- Activities in the meat sector, in establishments approved by the FAVV (the Belgian food safety agency).
Source: NSSO, Checkinatwork. Cleaning has its own registration on arrival and departure, which depends on a declaration of works and not on this amount (NSSO, works on immovable property).
Who has to be registered?
Everyone who carries out works on immovable property on the site: your own employees, your subcontractors and their employees, self-employed subcontractors and temporary agency workers. Who does what is explained on our page about subcontractors.
When do you register?
Every day, before the person carrying out the works starts work (NSSO, Checkinatwork).
When does the obligation end?
Among other moments, as soon as the works have been provisionally accepted. The report of provisional acceptance then serves as proof for the inspection (NSSO, works on immovable property).
Does the amount change with CIAO?
No. The NSSO states that check-in and check-out applies to works on immovable property (excluding cleaning) and the delivery of ready-mixed concrete, at places where the total amount is equal to or higher than 500,000 euros (excluding VAT) (NSSO, Check in and out at work).
Frequently asked questions
My part of the site is smaller than the threshold amount. Do I have to register?
Yes, if the total amount of the site reaches the threshold amount. The NSSO adds up the contracts with the client for the same project, not the amount of your part.
How do I know that a site falls under Checkinatwork?
The NSSO sends a reminder letter to all declared parties that registration is required. The contractor that declared the works must provide the information to everyone involved (NSSO, works on immovable property). Not sure? Take the CIAO check.
